Alexander Zverev Could Potentially Overtake Jannik Sinner as World No. 1 in ATP Rankings

German tennis player Alexander Zverev has emerged as one of the unexpected winners of the Grand Slam battle in 2026 and now he may potentially add another glittering prize to his collection over the course of next few months. The 29-year-old German won his first US Open Championship after comprehensively beating Ben Sheldon in the finals at the Flushing Meadows. This was his second major of his career and the year after he ended his long awaited Grand Slam glory by winning the French Open in June.

Zverev, a veteran now in the men’s singles tennis circuit, waited for nearly a decade to win his first major and now he has two in the kitty. With the Grand Slam wins, he has confirmed to the world that he is now part of the new ‘Big Three’ and he may well be on course to prove his status as the one to watch out for in the coming weeks.

As the race to finish as the year-end world number one is on, the tall German may potentially end up pushing the current world number one Jannik Sinner and claim his spot right at the top. The ATP rankings system works on a 52-week rolling calculation basis and the Italian will be defending 3500 points from the final weeks of 2025. In contrast, Zverev has only 1080 points to defend over the next few weeks, which gives him a realistic chance to close the gap on Sinner and gain that top spot in the ATP rankings.

The Spanish former world number one Carlos Alcaraz is also not too far behind in terms of points and he may well be in the mix to end the year as world number one, even though he missed a significant chunk of 2025 with a wrist injury. The year-end top ranking is a prestigious title and a significant achievement that all players wish to claim. It comes with a trophy that will be presented at the ATP finals in Turin in November. With Zverev potentially collecting that trophy in front of Sinner’s Italian fans adds another layer of intrigue to the story.
