Andy Robertson Reveals What Tottenham Must Do To Turn Around Poor Premier League Start

Andy Robertson has opined that Tottenham Hotspurs have to move on from their past on-field disappointments and avoid getting panicked as they look to work on turning the tables of their campaign in the on-going season. Spurs went into a three-week international break languishing at the bottom of the Premier League points table, having collected just two points from their past five games.

Despite spending £380 on signing 10 new arrivals at the club during the summer transfer, the Spurs’ head coach Roberto De Zerbi has so far not been able to produce any magic and halt the defeat cycle that has seen Spurs sitting at the bottom of the table. However, Scotland captain Robertson, who arrived at the club following the expiry of his contract with Liverpool, suggests there is not enough resolve in the squad to get back on the right track.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, the defender said, “They have had a couple of really tough seasons in terms of finishing in the league. They have now, to be fair, had to go in the market, they have spent a bit of money, but I do believe that Tottenham are not starting a journey. Now I don’t know how far that journey can go, nobody does, but the determination in that group is there. You can see last season hurt them a lot, and maybe we are still guilty of carrying that weight of last season on our shoulders.”

He further added, “I suppose, the message of the manager, first and foremost. And also that kind of falls on me, on the new players. We need to forget. We need to now try and get Tottenham back to where we believe they belong. You just see certain moments, like the Liverpool game, we played well there in moments, and then you get a goal against you, and it is like heads down. And, then we go back to 2-1 and all of a sudden it’s chests out, and everyone’s wanting the ball and we need that all the time.

“When we played Everton, we dominated pretty much the whole game, but we started getting panicked near the end and we started rushing things. I think we just need a little bit of luck and we need a little more of forgetting about the past and focusing on how we need to move forward. I do think as the season goes and goes, we will get better and better.”

The defender had quite a few alternative offers other than Spurs after his time at the Anfield came to an end, having secured two Premier League titles and won the Champions League in 2019 against Spurs in Madrid. Yet, the 32-year-old said that moving to Tottenham was his sole focus, provided they preserved their Premier League status.

Speaking about moving to Tottenham, he said, “It was always Tottenham, as long as they stayed up.” At that point, I didn’t want to go to the Championship with Tottenham, so I ended up getting invested in Tottenham. I was watching them and especially when De Zerbi came in, I was fully confident. They showed their interest first, and they really wanted me, and I was happy with how much they wanted me.”
