Atlético Madrid Sign Álex Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen

Spanish International, Alejandro Grimaldo has left Bayer Leverkusen and joined the Spanish club, Atletico Madrid. Both the clubs announced on Tuesday. The left-back player, Grimaldo has signed a four-year contract with Atletico until 2030, said the club spokesperson.

As per the media reports, the Madrid-based club has agreed to pay around € 20 million, which is about $22.8 million as transfer fees for the 30-year-old whose Leverkusen contract was till 2027.

Grimaldo joined the Bundesliga side from Portugal’s Benfica on a free transfer back in 2023 and won a historic unbeaten domestic double with Leverkusen in his first season. He scored 30 goals and had 45 assists in the 145 games he played for Leverkusen.

Currently in the US on his national duty with Spain’s World Cup Squad, Grimaldo has never played in the Spanish top league ever before and it will be his first appearance in the Spanish league with Atletico Madrid.

Leverkusen reportedly has several candidates in mind to replace Grimlando, including the left-back Raphael Guerreiro from Bayern Munich, FC Lorient’s Arsene Kouassi and Pep Chavvarria who is currently playing at Rayo Vallecano.
