Brendon McCullum Apologies to England Cricket Fans After Being Sacked As The Test Coach

Former England test team head coach, Brendon McCullum has come out in public to apologise to the England fans after being removed from the post, which had held for four years since 2022. He admitted that the England team did not deliver the results that were expected under his tutelage.

The erstwhile Kiwi captain will however continue to remain at the helm as England’s white-ball coach. Speaking to the media at the Edgbaston on Monday, ahead of England’s ODI series against India, McCullum accepted the ECB’s decision and said it was time for a new voice.

McCullum Confirms He Was Sacked

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Sunday that McCullum would no longer be serving as the head coach of England’s test team. The 44-year-old New Zealander made it clear that the decision came from the board. Speaking of the decision, he said, “Yeah, I got a tap on the shoulder.”

“I was quite disappointed but at the same time I fully respect the decision. We are in a results business and fundamentally our results weren't good enough. It is time for someone else to have a go.” He further explained. McCullum finished his tenure as the white-ball coach of the Three Lions with a record of 27 wins, 20 losses and 2 draws.

I Can Only Say Sorry

Speaking of the recent results and losses against New Zealand and Australia in the Ashes, McCullum admitted that England’s failure to win those series was the biggest disappointment of his tenure and said he takes full responsibility for the same. He further added, “we weren’t just quite able to win those big series, against India and Australia. For that I guess I can only say sorry.”

He also accepted full responsibility for the team’s culture and performances. “I was the leader of that group. I was in charge of the team culturally, in charge of the team tactically, in charge of the team results-wise as well. I have been around this game for 20-odd years and I know if you aren’t getting the results someone else needs an opportunity. I put my hand up for that and accept it wasn’t good enough.”

Leaving Alongside Ben Stokes - An Emotional End

The former New Zealand opener, McCullum said there was something fitting about leaving the Test set up soon after Ben Stokes called it a day from the format. Speaking to BBC, he said, the former England captain, Stokes had reached out to him the news of his sacking as the Test head coach came out.

He said, “I got some nice message from Stoksey. I guess in a romantic kind of way there’s something about Stokes and me going out together. We started it together and we go out together, and I have no problem with that.”

McCullum and Ben Stokes had completely transformed the way England approached Test Cricket with their aggressive style of play, popularly referred as ‘Bazball.’ England won 10 out of McCullum’s first 11 tests in charge, earning the praise of fans and pundits all over the world for their fearless cricket.
