Coco Gauff Beats Iva Jovic to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals

American tennis player Coco Gauff continued her march towards her second US Grand Slam 2026 by delivering yet another brilliant performance on Monday night, sending home fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 to reach the last night in New York for the first time since winning the championship three years ago in 2023.

Seeded fourth in the tournament, Gauff overwhelmed Jovic with some brilliant strokeplay throughout the match and showcasing a perfect combination of aggression and defense and closed out the match with twice as many winners as her opponent (18 to 9) and half as many unforced errors.

In what could be stated only as a clinical performance that lasted 1 hour 21 minutes, Gauff delivered a statement that has transformed her from a player who was just finding her feet at the big stage at this time last year to perhaps one of the most dangerous players right now.

Gauff next faces Mirra Andreeva and the match is touted to be one of the most thrilling encounters so far in the tournament. The fifth seed Andreeva defeated Anastasia Potapova in her fourth-round match after losing the first 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, scripting yet another come from behind wins of her career.

Speaking about her win, Gauff said, “the biggest difference in the way I have been playing is just trying to play with no regrets. I think I have a lot more fun and success playing like this.” The 22-year-old youngster arrived in New York fresh off winning her first title of the year in Cincinnati and she is yet to drop a set in the tournament. But, her Monday’s match against Jovic inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium was supposed to be one of her biggest challenges yet.

Coming into the match against Jovic, Gauff was well aware of what to expect from her and she brought her A game to the fore, eventually proving too strong for the 18-year-old opponent. In their previous meeting at the Rome Open in May earlier this year, the duo battled it out for nearly three hours before eventually Gauff came on top to register a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win after saving a match point.

Apart from being on course to winning her second US Grand Slam, Gauff also remains on course to achieve the World No. 1 ranking for the first time. This is possible if she goes all the way home and Elena Rybakina fails to win her next match. For now, Gauff will look to focus all her attention on her next match against the 19-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva and book her place in the last four.

Gauff has won all the five matches in their previous meetings and she will look to take that confidence into the match. Speaking of her quarter-finals match, Gauff said, “Mirra is someone that I always have tough matches with. They’ve leaned my way, but I think every match could have almost gone either way. She’s obviously in a different mindset now, at the top of the game coming off of a grand slam win. I think it’s going to be a really athletic, tough match. Hopefully I can take my opportunities when I get them.”
