England Appoint Stephen Fleming as Test Coach, Joe Root Returns as Captain

Former New Zealand captain and Chennai Super Kings boss, Stephen Fleming his new journey as a coach as he has been appointed as the England men’s test head coach. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the news of one of biggest coaching moves in world cricket.

The 53-year-old, Stephen replaces his fellow former teammate and countryman Brendon McCullum, who stepped aside from the role after England’s 2-1 defeat in the three-match test series against New Zealand in June. McCullum, however, continues to be the head coach of England’s in both white-ball formats, i.e., ODIs and T20Is.

Fleming will officially begin his tenure later this summer after spending time with his family in New Zealand. In the meantime, Marcus Trescothick, England’s assistant coach during McCullum reign will serve as the interim head coach for The Three Lions next test assignment against Pakistan which starts from Aug 19, 2026. Fleming will join the squad and take charge ahead of England’s tour of South Africa.

Although Fleming has never coached any international team before, he has one of the strongest coaching reputations and resumes of coaching in franchise cricket. He has been one of the most successful coaches in the Indian Premier League, having spent 18 with the same team and guiding Chennai Super Kings to five IPL title, 10 final appearances.

Apart from IPL, he has worked as the head coach for Southern Brave in The Hundred, the Melbourne Starts in the Big Bash League (BBL) and CSK’s affiliated teams in the United States and South Africa. Speaking about his appointment as England’s boss, he said “I am incredibly excited to be joining England as test coach. It is one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket, and I am honoured to be appointed.”

He further added, “The ambition is always to win now. But equally, it is about ensuring the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future. There is a lot of young talent in and around the team and our aim is to help them fulfil their potential as world-class cricketers.”

Fleming also welcomed the opportunity to work alongside England's newly appointed test captain, Joe Root. “I am particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as Captain. There is still plenty more to come from him.” Fleming quipped. He also identified Harry Brook’s development as a key priority, and added, “the best players are never finished products.”

ECB and Root back the new partnership

Joe Root described his return as the captain of the England team as ‘a great honour and privilege.’ He also said the opportunity of working with Fleming was one of the major reasons for accepting the roles again. “The opportunity to do that alongside Stepher is a huge motivator. He has proved over a long period of time that he is an exceptional leader with a great knowledge of the game.”

The Managing Director of ECB, Rob Key said about Felming’s appointment, “he is one of the most highly respected figures in cricket and he believes the New Zealander can turn England’s talented squad into a world-class outfit capable of sustained success.”
