Harry Kane smashes 49-year Bundesliga record with brace for Bayern Munich

England football captain Harry Kane has rewritten German football history by becoming the fastest player in history to score 100 Bundesliga goals. He achieved this incredible feat in just his 98th league appearance, during Bayern Munich’s 7-0 victory over Union Berlin.

Kane broke the 49 years old record set by Cologne’s Dieter Muller, who reached the same landmark in 1977, however, he took 129 matches. Since arriving at Bayern Munich in 2023, Kane has showcased remarkable efficiency in his performance, which can be gauged by his average goal time of 78.5 minutes.

Currently, the English international footballer has 152 goals in 154 games across all competitions, including 61 goals in the 51 games last season. He reached the 100-goal landmark for Bayern Munich with a 39th-minute penalty before heading in a Michael Olise cross to the back of the net in the second half of the game. This win against Union Berlin has put Kane’s team at the top of the table, ahead of the weekend matches.

Harry Kane’s incredible achievement in the game completely overshadowed Olise’s first hat-trick for Bayern. Speaking about his achievement to Sky Germany, Kane said, “I am very proud to now have scored 100 and 101 Bundesliga goals. I haven’t been around that long. I have loved every second of it. With Michael, Lucho, and Jamal, I naturally get chances and today was no exception. So I just want to thank the team, the club, the coach and the staff and everyone else who has helped me achieve this.”

He further added, “Let’s keep going like this. Scoring many goals in games is obviously a big step. Of course, there have been many important goals among them. I can only say that I am enjoying every minute of it. Just like today.”

The 33-year-old who is also among the top contenders to win the coveted Ballon d’Or in October is one of the bookmaker’s favourites to take home the ultimate glory. He scored 73 goals for the club and his country last term, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s career-best-single season record of 69 that he set in 2011-12 season and it is only surpassed by the Argentine great, Lionel Messi who scored 82 goals in the same season.

If Kane wins the Ballon d’Or award, he would become only the fifth English footballer to do, following the greats of the game like, Sir Stanly Matthews, Sir Bobby Charloton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen, and it would be the first for an Englishman since Owen won it in 2001.
