ICC ODI Rankings Update: Shubman Gill Closes In on World No. 1, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Climb

Even though team India recently lost the three-match ODI series against England last week by 2-1 margin, the top order batters, including captain Shubman Gill, and the veteran duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli enjoy good outings in the middle. They remained among India’s batting mainstay and strengthened themselves in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen.

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchel, however, continues to retain his spot at the top with 802 rating points. With scores of 80 not out, 31 and 77 to his name in the England series, Gill has slowly climbed up to the spot and is trailing Mitchel by just one point.

India’s master of chase, Virat Kohli who scored two fifties in the series also picked up valuable points on the table and he now sits with 767 rating points. The other half of Ro-Ko, Rohit Sharma who scored a scintillating hundred in the last match, he is now at 758 points.

Despite the fact that three of the top four batters in ODI rankings are Indians, the team’s on field performance has been quite substandard. After winning the opening game, the team lost its plot completely and were comprehensively beaten at Cardiff and Lord’s.

In the second ODI, the whole team failed as a batting unit with the exception of the experienced Virat Kohli and the new T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer. After Lord's, the absence of Bumrah in the bowling department, allowed England to take advantage of India’s inexperience and they put up a massive total of 387/3 on board, which the visitors failed to overcome.

Apart from the Indian batters, England’s run machine, Joe Root remained the biggest beneficiary in the rankings. He jumped four places up and he now sits at the number eight position, making his foray into the top 10 for the first time since 2020. The former England captain, Root scored heavily in all three matches. His scorecard read, 76, 99, and 74 and he remained unbeaten throughout the series.

Kuldeep Yadav loses his spot in the top 10 bowlers list

While batters had plenty to gain from the ODI series, the only bowler to previously feature in the top 10 bowler rankings, Kuldeep Yadav has now slipped out of the list. Yadav, who did not get a chance to play in the starting XI in any of the three matches is now at the 11th position.

Bumrah, on the other hand, who has not played much ODI cricket in recent years, jumped one place up and now sits at 23rd position.
