India vs Afghanistan: Washington Sundar Declared Fit, Jasprit Bumrah Awaits Final Nod

According to a TOI report, Indian off-spinning all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has been out of action for a while now due a hamstring injury, has been declared fit and cleared to play for India's upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at home. Sundar, who missed the two-match test series in Sri Lanka recently will be available for selection for the first game on 13th September at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

The team management and the selectors, however, are still awaiting an update on the fitness of fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah and seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, both of whom were picked to be in the squad for the series, subject to clearing their fitness tests.

Sundar was cleared by the medical team of the BCCI after assessing his fitness levels and recovery from injury. He was asked to undergo a series of fitness tests, including a match simulation exercise at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru on September 4. Reddy, Bumrah, and Rana also underwent similar simulation tests and they will undergo a second round of tests on Wednesday.

Only after they complete the tests will the CoE provide a fitness report on the trio, as per the TOI source tracking the developments of these cricketers. This means a final update on the Indian squad could come just a few days before the start of the series. Sundar’s availability is a big boost for Team India.

Bumrah missed out on playing the Sri Lanka test series after he suffered an on-field knee injury during the team’s previous white-ball assignment in England. Rana has had issues with his hamstring, and Reddy too was ruled out of the UK and Sri Lanka tours because of an injury to his quadriceps.

India had named a full-strength squad with Shreyas Iyer at the helm for the three-match T20I series against Asian neighbours, Afghanistan. The squad picked for the series is almost similar to the one that will travel to Japan for the Asian Games 2026.
