IPL Coaches Lead England’s Search for A Test Coach to Replace Brendon McCullum

The England test team is currently without a captain and a head coach. And the Three Lions’ search for the new coach for the red-ball coach has taken on a distinctly IPL flavour as many of the world’s most accomplished franchise coaches have emerged as the leading contenders to replace the ousted New Zealander, Brendon McCullum.

The current head coach of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and former head coach of England, Andy Flower is known to be the leading contender among the nine-man shortlist, which also features ex-Chennai Super Kings boss, Stephen Fleming, Lucknow Super Giants’ head coach Justin Langer and Tom Moody. This undermines England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) preference for an experienced coach who has a proven record across international and franchise cricket.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the ECB is aiming to appoint a successor to McCullum before the start of England’s next test assignment against Pakistan, which starts on August 19 at Headingley. Although the officials are prepared to take longer if required to appoint the best and right candidate for the job ahead of the Ashes next year.

IPL coaches dominate the England’s next coach shortlist

Andy Flower who helped RCB win back-to-back IPL trophies in 2025 and 2026 and was also the head coach of England from 2009 to 2014 is believed to be ECB’s top choice for the seat left empty after McCullum’s exit. However, the Zimbabwean’s commitments with RCB and IPL and the London Spirit in The Hundred could have potential complications.

The 58-year-old former Zimbabwe wicketkeeper is said to be weighing is option on whether he wants to return to pressures of international cricket and the high-pressure coaching role. Former Kiwi captain, Stephen Fleming has emerged as the serious content for the England’s test coach role after he ended his 18-year stint with CSK.

Stephen Fleming had previously turned down the offer when England approached him before McCullum’s appointment in 2022 citing his long-standing commitment to IPL but his availability now has reignited ECB’s interest.

Another high-profile name on the shortlist is former Australian left-hand opening batter, Justin Langer. He is currently associated with Lucknow Supergiants in IPL and he was also among the few names considered during the previous recruitment process. His disciplined style of coaching is now viewed as the perfect antidote to England’s recent struggle in the Test matches.

The ECB has already started contacting the candidates but with England having lost seven of their last nine test matches, the governing body is prioritising a long-term appointment capable of rebuilding the team before the next year’s ashes, even if it means naming and interim coach, which could potentially be Marcus Trescothick, the current assistant coach for the series against Pakistan.
