James Coles: England's New All-Rounder Ready for India Challenge
James Cole, the young all-rounder from Sussex has earned his maiden call up to the England ODI team for the series against India after his consistent performance in the county championship matches.
Sussex all-rounder James Cole has been called to join the England seniors national team for the ODI series against India. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the most promising young cricket players in England and has delivered consistent performances in the county championships.
A left-hand batter and slow left-arm orthodox spinner, he has the ability to contribute with bat and ball, making him a valuable asset for the team across formats. Cole’s rise to fame has been built on some solid performances rather than an overnight success. From being Sussex’s youngest ever debutant as a teenager to scoring 1,000 runs in the County Championship last season, the young lad steadily rose up the cricketing ladder in England.
Breaking records at 16 for Sussex
Much before his call up to the England team, James Coles made headlines all over England even as a teenager when he became the youngest ever debutant for Sussex when he was just 16 years and 157 days. He made his debut in the Bob Willis Trophy against Surrey at The Oval and immediately impressed everyone by dismissing former England opening batter, Rory Burns as well as Jamie Smith and Ben Foakes. He eventually finished the match with figures of 3 for 35. He also scored 21 runs in the same match, showcasing his all-round potential.
Coles went to Magdalen College School in Oxford before signing his first professional contract with Sussex in 2021. He is one of the products of Sussex's player development partnership with the Oxfordshire Cricket Board.
He soon progressed through England’s age group set and went on to represent England in the Under-19 team’s tour to the West Indies and Sri Lanka as well as the Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Caught England’s attention with domestic records
Coles’ breakthrough at the senior level came in 2024 when he scored his maiden first-class century against Glamorgan. In the same season he scored two more centuries, cementing his place in Sussex's batting order and eventually earning a call up to England Lions.
His best performance in domestic cricket came in the 2025 season. Playing for Sussex in their return to Division one of the County Champion, Coles hit for centuries and crossed the 1000-run mark in a single first-class season for the first time.
He also strengthened his white-ball credentials by helping Sussex reach the final of the Vitality Blast before joining the Southern Brave as the wild card pick in The Hundred.
