Jannik Sinner Out of Shanghai Masters With Knee Injury As No. 1 Ranking Comes Under Threat
The Wimbledon champion has not played since July, with Alexander Zverev now able to capitalise in the race for the ATP world No. 1 ranking
Tennis world number 1 player, Jannik Sinner has confirmed that he will be withdrawing from the next week’s Shanghai Masters as he continues to grapple with recovering completely from his keen injury that has kept him out of action since he won the Wimbledon in July.
The 25-year-old Italian has not played a single professional match since his triumph at the All England Club, missing the US Open, and the entire hard court season in North America as well as the ongoing ATP 500 event in Beijing.
Speaking about his decision to not play, Sinner wrote on Instagram, “Unfortunately, I won't be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped. I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans and I am very sorry that I won't be able to do so next week.”
The Masters 1000 event runs from October 7-18 and features a strong field led by four-time champion Novak Djokovic, along with Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Felxi Auger-Aliassime and defending champion Valentin Vacherot. Sinner had won the Shanghai title back in 2024, defeating Djokovic in the finals.
Sinner missing the tournament could boost Zverev’s chances to finish the season as the world number one. The German player, who won the US Open and the French Open this year has now emerged as the closest challenger to the Italian’s position as the world number one player.
Zverev can move to the top of the rankings if he manages to win the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters.
