Jurgen Klopp in Line to Become Germany's New Head Coach
The former Liverpool manager is the leading candidate to replace Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s shock exit from the World Cup after defeat by Paraguay.
Julian Nagelsamann has exited as Germany’s head coach, and the DFB appears to have its sights set on one man that German football fans have been dreaming of for several years - Jurgen Klopp.
The decision of change in coach comes after Germany’s unfortunate exit from the 2026 World Cup where they were knocked out by the South American nation, Paraguay on penalties on June 30.
From Euro optimism to heart break at World Cup
Nagelsmann took over the top job at Germany in September 2023 after Hansi Flick’s departure. The DFB handed him an extension of the contract through Euro 2028. German media outlets including Bild and Suddeutsche Zeitung reported that the DFB effectively encouraged Nagelsmann to resign.
As on July 2, 2026, reports from within the federation indicated that Nagelsmann “no longer has a chance” to maintain his palace as the head coach.
Klopp comes into the picture
Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 after his iconic tenure at Anfield that included several trophies, including a Champions League title and a Premier League crown. Since then he has been working as a head of global soccer at Red Bull, a role that keeps him in the sport without the relentless weekly grind of managing the club.
On July 1, he addressed all speculation directly. Klopp’s Red Bull role is a genuine commitment, not a placeholder gig. He has responsibilities across the Red Bull football ecosystem, and walking away would require careful negotiation.
