Kevin Pietersen Returns to England Setup as Part of White-Ball Coaching Team

England have appointed former Ashes-winner and talismanic batter Kevin Pietersen to their white-ball coaching set-up as they begin their preparations for the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup. The former Poms cricketer who was known for his aggressive style of batting joins the team as a specialist mentor and will start his stint in the role from the upcoming T20I and ODI matches against Sri Lanka.

Pietersen will also be associated with the team’s winter tours to South Africa and Australia before joining the team again for the home series against Pakistan and New Zealand in the next summer as well as the 50-over World Cup, which is scheduled to be across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The current head coach of England in white ball cricket, Brendon McCullum said, “I have immense respect for Kevin Pietersen (KP) and what he has achieved in the game.” He further added, “He has had an amazing impact on English cricket. So, for someone with his experience and stature to want to play a role with this team is a fantastic result.”

The South African-born player, KP was one of England’s most successful batters in the white-ball format, and he was named the player of the tournament when they won the T20I World Cup for the first time in 2010. KP, aged 46, scored almost 4,500 ODI runs at an impressive average of 41.32, which is only bettered by the current England’s white ball skipper, Joe Root. While in the T20I, KP has the highest averages amongst all English batters who have scored more than 1,000 international runs.

Whilst KP was a prolific run-scorer on the field, off the field, he has had some issues. Most notably he has had a fall out with a number of former English players and coaches during his career. He was also among one of the first players to advocate for the English players to be allowed to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and other franchise tournaments around the world, which often put him at loggerheads with the English management.

Since he hung his boots, he has had a successful career as a commentator and content creator. He has also worked as a mentor for the IPL team, the Delhi Capital. Speaking about his appointment as the mentor for the England’s white-ball team, Pietersen said, “Putting on the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honour and a deeply special moment.”

“We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximise their potential.” He further quipped. England’s T20 team is currently ranked second in the world and in the ODI rankings England is sitting at number seven position, and have been struggling in the format since their 2019 World Cup triumph.
