Morgan Rogers Joins Chelsea in Record £117m Transfer from Aston Villa

Morgan Rogers has completed the move from Aston Villa to Chelsea for an estimated £117m. He has signed a seven-year contract with the new club and became the Blues’ record signing.

The 23-year-old transfer to Chelsea was completed on Saturday last week. Chelsea signed Rogers’s signature while the rival clubs like Arsenal had shown great interest in him and they were even in talks with the England international and were considered to be the favourites to bag the deal with him.

However, for Rogers the opportunity to work with Chelsea’s new manager Xabi Alonso was a key factor to choose the southwest London club. Rogers recently played a key role in helping England to a third-place finish at World Cup 2026.

Rogers was in the playing XI for England that took the field in the semi-final match against Argentina in Atlanta last week, which they lost 2-1. He also started in England’s 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play off game.

He told his new club’s website, “I am so excited. For me Chelsea is the biggest club in London and a club I have always admired since I was a kid. I am really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we have got and where the club is heading. That’s why I am here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Rogers is a versatile forward who would meet the exact needs of Chelsea for a player who can play in different attacking roles. He has enjoyed a rapid rise at Villa park following his move from Middlesbrough in January 2024, helping the team finish in the top-four of the Europa League last season.

The signing of Rogers comes as one of the most significant buys of Chelsea owners BlueCo’s four-year reign and he is the first serious sign that the club have completed moving from their policy of exclusively signing young and untested players.

One of the co-owners of the club, Behdad Eghbali indicated towards the end of the last season that they have learned the lessons from their underwhelming campaign in which they finished 10th and were thrashed in the Champions League last-16 match by PSG, and that they would now be targeting players in the market that would be in a position help them challenge for the title.

The deal with Rogers is arguably the biggest the club has made so far since Cole Palmer moved from Manchester City back in 2023. He now becomes the fourth signing of the summer as the Blues overhaul their squad after the signing of winger Geovany Quenda, striker Emamnuel Emegha and the defender Marco Palestra.
