Security Beefed Up for Argentina vs England Semi-final Tie: Football World Cup 2026

The British overseas territory, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas, remains the subject of a sovereignty dispute between the two nations.

A statement issued by the Atlanta Police stated,”As Atlanta prepares to host an upcoming FIFA World Cup Semi-Final match and welcomes increased numbers of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department has enhanced its citywide public safety and security posture.

Additional personnel and resources have already been deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the venues, entertainment districts and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

The statement also said, “These proactive measures are specially designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event.”

After Argentina won 3-2 in a dramatic fashion against Egypt in the last-16, many players were filmed signing a chant referencing the islands and the Argentina greats, Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona. While Lionel Messi is all set to face the Three Lions for the first time in a World Cup semi-final match in his long and illustrious career, many fans are drawing parallels to the iconic quarterfinal match between the two nations in 1986 that saw Diego Maradona score the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal sealing victory for Argentina.

Amidst the build up to the first world cup match between these two football teams in 24 years, an Argentine war veterans federation has called on the fans to focus only on the football rather than the politics and past history between the two countries.

A statement from the War Veterans Federation said, "Sovereignty is defended in international forums through diplomacy, historical truth and the peaceful, non-negotiable calm enshrined in our national constitution. We consider it essential to draw a clear and unwavering line between sporting passion and the national cause. The ball rolls, pride in our colour multiplies, but memory remains intact.”

Earlier in the week, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said, “It's just a game of football. Football will do the talking during the match.” The Atlanta Police has praised the behaviour of the English fans in the US but urged the fans back home to follow their example after over 500 domestic football-related incidents were reported over the weekend. The incidents in the UK took place during the extra time of the match between England and Norway that England won 2-1, with more than 100 arrests.
