Shreshta Iyer Backs Brother Shreyas: He Will Be Among India's Best Captains

India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer is finding himself hounded by the critics and the cricket lovers back in India but he has also received unprecedented support from his loved ones, especially his sister, Shreshta Iyer. After another disappointing loss against England in the third T20I, which was India’s biggest defeat in terms of runs margin, his winless streak as the full-time captain extended to five matches.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Shreshta has come out strongly in support of her brother and urged the Indian cricket fans to not judge her brother only by the recent losses. She also expressed confidence that he would go on to become one of India’s greatest captains.

Speaking to Filmigyan, she told, “Shubman Gill ho, Virat Kohli toh legend hai, Rohit Sharma is also a legend, Sachin Tendulkar is a legend. Ye logon ne bhi kaafi matches lose kiye hain. But agar aap sirf Shreyas Iyer, Shreyas Iyer hi bolte rahoge, toh may be aapko kuch to kuch problem hai. But I feel that he is amazing.

He has a very different personality overall. I think he has a lot to give to India. Unke jitna aur kisi ke paas nahi hai. Unke paas itna kuch dene ke liye hai. Aur coming time bahut jaldi aane wala hai, woh time bahut jaldi aayega, jab ye bolenge ki Shreyas Iyer is one of the best captains of India. I believe it is already happening.”

Her remarks come after India England hammered India by 125 runs in the third T20 of the five-match series between the two sides. The huge loss only compounded Iyer’s struggle with both bat and tactics on field since taking over the captaincy of India in July.

Tough Start as a Captain for Iyer

Iyer’s journey as the captain of team India began on a sour note. In his first assignment, India lost the two-match series against Ireland 2-0. And now in England, they have lost two out of three matches with the first match of the series abandoned due to bad weather.

These numbers paint quite a worrying picture. In his last 12 T20 matches as the captain, Iyer has managed to register only one win while suffering 10 losses, which extends back to the recently concluded IPL.

India face a must-win situation

After two consecutive losses and the series at stake, India now has little room for any error. With a 0-2 deficit, they have to come out strong and win in the fourth T20I against England at the Country Ground in Bristol on Thursday. This will only keep the series alive.
