Teenage Cricket Sensation of India, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Earns a Place in India’s T20 Squad

He is just a 15-year-old, and already creating waves in the cricketing world with his incredible batting skills. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the prodigal talent is all set to make history as the youngest debutant in International cricket after being called up for India’s upcoming T20 series against England and Ireland. His inclusion in the side is confirmed by an announcement from the BCCI on Saturday. 

The wonderkid from Bihar, Sooryavanshi, earned his place in the Indian squad after his heroic performance in the IPL 2026, where he became the highest run getter of the tournament, scoring 776 runs with one century and five half-centuries in 16 matches. He also became the youngest player in the history of the tournament to earn the Orange cap.

Playing for Rajasthan Royals, his performance this season made him the first player in IPL to be named Most Valuable Player (MVP and the Best Emerging Player, with experts and former players tipping him for a spot in the senior side in T20 matches. 

An Explosive Opener and a Genuine Game Changer

If Sooryanvashi finds a spot in the final playing XI during India’s T20 series against England and Ireland, he would create history to become the youngest player to play for India, bettering the great Sachin Tendulkar, who made his debut at the tender age of 16. 

Talking about his inclusion in the Indian International team, the Chairman of Selectors, Ajit Agarkar, told the reporters, “We have seen what he can do, towards playoffs, almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals.” He further added, “Not just this season, he had a great start, and to back it up in a competition that is as competitive and high-pressure, he is a game changer. We have high hopes for him, and he has picked himself.”

The chairman of selectors, Agarkar, added that Shreyas Iyer, who replaced Surya Kumar Yadav as the new skipper of Team India in T20s had been appointed after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024. Iyer also captained Punjab Kings in 2025 where they finished as runners-up. He last played an international T20 match way back in December 2023. 

Talking about handing over the reins of captaincy to Iyer, Agakar said, “Led a team to IPL title, and his own performances have been good. He was close to being part of the World Cup squad, in my opinion, was a ‘stand-out candidate.’” 

The Way Forward for Team India

After a string of poor performances, and low scores from Suryakumar Yadav, cost him dearly, losing his captaincy just three months after leading India to its third T20 World Cup triumph on home soil. The 35-year-old, former T20 captain of India, Yadav, scored just 242 runs in nine innings at the T20 World Cup, with his standout performance coming against the minnows, United States, where scored an unbeaten 84. 

After a poor outing for India at the world cup, his form barely improved in the IPL, where he managed to amass only 270 runs in I3 innings for Mumbai Indians with a dismal average of 20.76, as his team finished second from the bottom. 

Speaking about his expulsion as the captain of Team India, Agarkar said, “It is tough one to remove Surya, having just won the World Cup, but as it happens after most World Cups, you try to reassess what your best way forward is. We thought this was the best way forward.”

India is set to play Ireland in T20 later this month before playing a five-match series against England, next month in July. 

Squad Announced for the Asian Games

The BCCI also named the squad for this year’s Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which will begin on September 24 with the final to be held on October 3.
