Wales U19 Coach Chris Gunter Silent on Future After UEFA Exit

The Wales U19 football team suffered their third consecutive loss at the Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground on Saturday against their European counterpart, Denmark by 3-0. Chris Gunter has been linked with a role with his former Wales’ teammate Aaron Ramsey’s coaching team at Oxford United, where he was appointed as the head coach.

“I have been so busy making sure that we have appeared in this tournament,” said Gunter when asked about his move to League One Oxford. There has been absolutely no time to be talking about potential moves or anything else other than that.” he further added.

Gunter’s team had been beaten by Spain 7-0 before Wales beat Germany by 4-0 in the opening games of the eight-team tournament being held in north Wales. Gunter’s men’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament was already over before their final against Denmark, but Wales’ spot in the Under-20 World Cup was at stake.

“I know everybody associated with the tournament was already disappointed because we wanted to do more,” Gunter told BBC Sport Wales. “I think for the player, in the longer piece it will be a really good thing because of the experiences they have had. But in the short-term, it is a real eye-opener of the levels that are there and exist in international football. For them, the bigger thing is that these boys want to go and represent their country in senior football. That’s what you are coming up against, but they are naturally disappointed.”
